What is Bio-fuel?
Bio-fuel is a cleaner burning fuel that is produced from renewable resources like soybean oil. It can be blended with other petroleum products like heating oil. Bio-fuel is biodegradable, renewable, domestically produced and is readily available. For home heating purposes, bio-fuel is blended with #2 heating oil to produce B5 bio-fuel.
Bio-fuel and Environmental Benefits
The use of bio-fuel has immediate positive effects on the environment.
- Carbon Monoxide – Bio-fuel reduces the amount of Carbon Monoxide produced by furnaces and boilers in the home.
- Sulfur Dioxide – Sulfur dioxide is the pollutant that causes acid rain. Bio-fuel contains almost no sulfur and therefore reduces the amount of sulfur dioxide in burn exhaust.
- Biodegradable & Non-Toxic – United States Department of Agriculture tests confirm that bio-fuel is less toxic than table salt and biodegrades as quickly as sugar
- Better Air Quality - While relatively new to heating systems, bio-diesel fuel has been used by the trucking industry across the country for a number of years. Major carriers use bio-diesel within their fleets to meet
federal mandates for air quality.
Bio-fuel and the Economy
- Domestically Produced Product - While soybeans are grown the world over, the U.S. produces the most soybeans of any nation. This product benefits the American farmer as well.
- Reduces Our Dependence on Foreign Oil - Because soybeans are grown domestically, Bio-fuel can do its part to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. With a 5% blend, we cut our need for oil by 5%
Bio-Fuel, You and Your Family
- More Efficient Burn = Less Soot – Bio-fuel was developed to create a product that burns cleaner than standard heating oil. A more efficient burn reduces the amount of soot build up in your boiler or furnace. Less soot means not only that your system operates more cleanly and efficiently but that you use less oil.
- Lubricity and Reduced Maintenance Costs – Biofuel provides significantly higher lubricity compared to conventional heating oil. (Lubricity is the ability of an oil to provide lubrication thereby reducing friction and wear). The greater lubricity of biofuel can reduce wear on a system and decrease maintenance costs.
